SHM 1 - "Felicidad"

This is the first in a series of three mixes chronicling and celebrating the talents of the Swedish House Mafia (SHM). For the uninitiated, this is the name given to four of the top house producers in the world today, and you may be surprised how far their influence has reached.

The SHM comprises Axel Hedfors (aka Axwell), Eric Prydz, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso. Originally, I was going to do a single mix but they have so much great stuff out there I found that I couldn’t possibly fit them all into 70 minutes. “Felicidad”, so called because this is a happy, upbeat and summery collection of tunes, is almost exclusively Axwell’s work – he’s also half of Mambana and Jetlag.

A lot of these are three or four years old but still sound fresh. Plus, “So Right” is one of my favourite tracks of all time and I had to get it in somewhere. Anyway, if this little mix doesn’t kickstart your summer, nothing will.

Jojoba

According to Wikipedia, jojoba (pronounced ho-ho-ba) is a shrub native to California and is often used in cosmetics as a moisturiser. However, that has nothing to do with this mix. This mix is called Jojoba because it was created in October. Because as Billy Connolly once said, "What's all this about jojoba being in shampoo? Where I come from, jojoba is the month after September." Billy Connolly is Scottish. And a comedian. Allegedly.

Anyway, this is one of my better mixes and has some top, top tunes on it, from Axwell's remix of 'Jump' to 'Remember' by fellow Swedish House Mafioso, Eric Prydz, this time in his Pryda guise. But the best bit of all for me is when the beats kicks in near the start of of 'Tilt My Hat'. If you've ever heard a juicier, fatter bassline, please let me know.

Electrock

Next up is, well, Electrock, as you can see.

What I've done there is marry the words 'Electro' and 'Rock'. Clever eh? I'm a writer, innit?

Anyway, on the face of it this is a bit of an odd collection of artists, with Robbie Williams and Justin Timberlake alongside the likes of Led Zeppelin and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Actually, it's not the likes of Led Zeppelin and Red Hot Chili Peppers. It is Led Zeppelin and Red Hot Chili Peppers. The point is, it all seems to go together rather well. He says, modestly.

Oh, and it's quite a dirty little mix this one, plenty of squelch and zip going on. You'll see what I mean. It's grubby. You'll love it, you slag.

Proper Music

Hello and welcome to my new music blog. How exciting is this?!

That's a rhetorical question, by the way. Clearly, it's very exciting indeed. Anyway, I'll be posting my DJ mixes here. Or rather, I'll be posting links to my mixes and the corresponding tracklistings. That way, you can see if you want to download it beforehand. See? I've thought of everything.

In time, I may put a few of my older mixes up here but to start with, here's a new one. It's a mixture of old and new tunes and veers between uplifting and soulful to the downright dirty. There's even a bit of an 80s feel to it, thanks to some saucy little samples.
